"Aw come on guys! Just once? pleeeease?" Dandin asked imploringly.
"Sham off ya little twerp!" One of the boys said. "Yeah, don't you have some algebrology to be doing?" another one said. This made them all burst out in laughter, and Dandin felt his heart being slowly pulled apart. As he turned around to leave, he ran right into a pair of legs. It was Bryan, the leader of the gang. "I'm sorry Dandin, but you can't come along. You just aren't old enough." Dandin understood. He understood that it was foolish for him to have thought that they would make an exception. His eyes began to swell with tears. "Hey," Bryan said, "don't take it so hard. If you wanna ever hang out with us you gotta be tough right?" Dandin looked up and could see that Bryan understood too. He even thought that perhaps Bryan used to be the one who got left out when he was little. Bryan took a quick glance over Dandin and saw the other boys horseplaying around a little ways away. "Hey, take this." He put out his hand and revealed a small ring, made to look like a curled up snake. "My mom got this for me, but she just buys me things so I'll like her new boyfriend. Why don't you have it, or give it to some girl." Dandin felt a surge of pride rush over him. "To think!" he thought, "Bryan giving me something! I bet the other boys would be so jealous if they found out!"
"Now get outta here" Bryan said smiling and pointing his thumb over his shoulder. Dandin ran from the playground, and saw that it was dusk. "I hope mom doesn't get worried" he thought. "I'll save some time by taking a short cut!" He said with glee, still happy about recieving the ring. He ran through Miss Laisdale's backyard and became lost in a maze of sheets and clothing. "Drat! Today must be laundry day!" He looked around, but wasn't sure which way to go. The moonlight reflecting off the sheets frighted Dandin a little. The wind began to howl, and he thought he heard foot steps. He quickly put the ring in his pocket, and slowly approached a sheet. He knelt down to see if anyone was standing around, but there were no feet.
